10 States Where Jobs Are Growing Fastest
Almost 5 million Americans moved out of state last fiscal year, many of them for employment purposes. Will you be one of them in 2019?
Before making that kind of move, take a look at the latest numbers to see which states are enjoying the strongest job growth. That should be a consideration even if you're looking ahead to retirement. After all, many retirees decide to get back into the labor force to supplement their income or stay active and productive.
Kiplinger compiled a list of the 10 states with the fastest rate of job growth. Not surprising is that 8 of the states are in the West. Florida (8th) and North Carolina (9th) were the exception, making the list by virtue of their 2.3% job growth last year.
Coming in at the top of the list was Idaho. The 1st place state added more than 21,000 jobs through the first part of last year, giving it a 3% growth rate. It also has an unemployment rate of 2.7%, well under the national rate of 3.8%. Its small, but growing high tech industry clustered around Boise, the state capitol. Tourism is big, with visitors coming year round to ski, fish and raft its rivers and mountains.
A similar list by CNBC was nearly identical to the Kiplinger list. The only difference was that instead of Florida, CNBC put West Virginia in 8th place.
